Project Milestones

Most kitchen projects proceed in the same general pattern. Below we outline the steps through which most of you will go. Remember that this is a process — sometimes longer, sometimes shorter — but always a process in which your understanding will grow. Let us start by giving the "lay of the land."

* Interview To assist in creating a plan which meets your needs and reflects the look you desire, there is an initial interview to discuss the scope and goals of the project: your lifestyle, your storage needs, your work habits, and your budgetary concerns.
Job site survey Field measurements are taken, a survey of structural considerations is done, and living patterns are observed. For new construction, information will initially be taken from house plans and field verified after framing.
Preliminary plans The designer will develop floor plans to outline the possibilities, present conceptual ideas and form the basis for discussion and revision.
Revised plans Your input and further decisions are incorporated into the plan. These plans generally include all cabinet units, appliances, fixtures and materials being chosen.
Pricing and equipment specifications Complete specifications and prices for products should be supplied.
* Final plans With your approval of the design, you will receive copies of the floor plan with elevations showing configuration of cabinetry, appliances and fixtures and detailing any special design feature. Plans should adhere to the guidelines of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Partial payment is made at this time.
Order There is a waiting period while the cabinets are made and the other products are ordered. As delivery time approaches, you need to empty the space and set up an alternate place to handle some kitchen duties.
* Delivery When the cabinets are delivered, the installation begins.
Installation observation Job site visits are made by the designer to insure that the plan developed is being followed.
Demolition Tear out the old cabinets, appliances and anything structural that will be changed.
Preparation Electric, plumbing, and walls are prepared for new design.
Floor If the floor is unfinished wood, it is best to lay it at this point.
Cabinets First wall and then base cabinets are set.
* Countertop Measurement taken once the base cabinets are set. The top is made in the shop
Paint First paint.
Continuing installation Remanining cabinets, trim work, and, finally, hardware are done.
Countertop installation The top is brought to the home to be installed.
* Hook-up Sink, faucet and appliances are put in place and hooked up.
Finish floor Floor is laid or wood is stained and coated.
Tile Tile backsplash and grouting put up.
Punchout Final carpentry, paint touch-up, and the list of adjustments.
* Done!
